The next day, instead of leaving the spa as soon as she finished work, Christy tucked herself away in one of the well-insulated massage rooms and closed the door. The sense of privacy felt good. She had contacted Katie earlier and had arranged for them to have a video call. Seeing Katie’s face appear on her iPad made her tear up, as it always did.

The two friends started off the call with their usual litany of how much they missed each other, and then the video feed went out.

“Let’s keep going,” Katie said. “The audio is working fine. Tell me what’s up with you.”

Christy dove in and told Katie everything she hadn’t been able to talk about at home: her encounter yesterday with Aunt Marti; how Todd was hardly home now that the bench business was on such a steep upward trajectory; and how Doug and Tracy hadn’t found another place to live yet, nor did either of them seem anxious to do so.

“I thought it was going to be so great,” Christy concluded. “Everything was coming together. We finally had money in the bank, and I thought that hosting Doug and Tracy was what I’d always dreamed of doing. Hospitality is my thing. What’s happening at our home right now is not my thing.”

“Living in community has its downsides, that’s for sure.”

Christy realized that Katie lived with inconveniences like this all the time at the conference center.

“How do you do it, Katie? How do you keep your own life and marriage protected?”

“You just have to adjust all the time. It sounds like that’s what you’re doing. Don’t worry if it’s messy. What you’re doing is worth it. I’m sure this has been a difficult time for Doug and Tracy, especially with her mom and dad moving.”

“Her parents left two days ago. Their house hasn’t sold yet, but they packed up and left. Tracy was over there helping whenever she could last week. Then she would come home and collapse.”

“I’m glad she could come back to your place and know that she had a listening ear and lots of love.”

Christy felt comforted by Katie’s confident words, but she didn’t think she had been especially loving or understanding of Tracy. Christy tried to explain her sense of failure to Katie.

“Don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re doing well, Chris. And don’t worry about Aunt Marti. She has issues. We’ve all observed that at one time or another.”

“But it is her house, technically. She owns it. She has a right to be concerned about its condition. It did feel like a cluttered three-ring circus when she came over yesterday. Daniel was in the middle of a meltdown.”

“The poor kid has been displaced,” Katie said. “We see it a lot here with missionary kids that are in transition. It’s the same in the refugee camps. Being without a permanent home is hard on anybody. It was hard on me when I first moved here.”

“That’s a good point.”

“Here’s what I know, Christy. Being in a close community with people is hard.
